Since you have no experience in this area, pictures can help you release your creative side. You may like the decorations on one cake, but not the style. or you may love the design of a cake that seems to be tiered at odd angles, but not the way it is decorated. You can combine the two.

Fortunately wedding cakes mean big business and there are plenty of great resources to help you find wedding cake pictures.

Today’s wedding cakes are not the cakes that your mother’s generation had. They have moved beyond the typical round or square layers. Wedding cakes come in al shapes and sizes.

What would have been impossible 15 years ago is now commonplace and pictures help you to understand what can be done. Wedding cakes can be a combination of several shapes arranged in unusual ways. Cake toppers are no longer just the cutesy bride and groom of the past. Themed cakes such as Harley Motorcycle cakes were unheard of a few years ago. Now themed cakes are the order of the day.

Resources to get the most out of wedding cake pictures:

If you do a web search for wedding cake photos you will get so many links that you could still be looking 50 years from now. It is possible you will find a cake in time for your silver anniversary. We do have a few ideas that can help use resources other than the internet to look for cake ideas.

Local Wedding Photographers

Every wedding photographer takes pictures of the cake and cake cutting ceremony. They should be happy to show you, especially if you let them know you are also shopping for a photographer. You can find photographers in the yellow pages.

Local Bakeries

Every baker that makes wedding cakes should have a portfolio of wedding cakes they have made. You may find your cake there. Don’t be afraid to ask if they can take elements from two or more cakes to create a wedding cake that is uniquely yours. Even if you are planning to make your own cake this may give you some ideas.

Libraries

If you want to make your own cake, libraries will have cookbooks that you can use to find a recipe. They will also likely have wedding planning books that will probably have cake pictures. If your library has a magazine section check for bridal magazines, they usually have wedding cake pictures.

Many libraries have local directories which should list wedding planners, photographers, bakers, hotels and caterers, all of which should have pictures of their work.

Hotels

Many hotels cater wedding receptions, ask the receptionist or banquet manager who they think is the best baker in the area is. The hotel may even have their own baker. If so, ask to see examples of their work. These people as well as bakeries and photographers, all deal with real cakes and should know the best bakers.

Book Stores

Take a look at wedding planning books, and bridal magazines for pictures of wedding cakes you might be interested in.

Caterers

Caterers often have favorite bakers that they refer clients to or may even have their own bakers, if so again ask to see pictures.

Bridal Magazines

They often have pictures of beautiful cakes with credit to the baker. you may be lucky enough to come upon an issue that concentrates on choosing a wedding cake and is loaded with pictures.

Vogue

Modern Bride

The Knot

Bridal Guide

Online Resources

An online search for wedding cakes or wedding cake pictures will yield so many sources that you could grow old and gray before you find a wedding cake picture for the cake of your dreams. You may want to check out this web site:

http://design-wedding-cakes-pictures.blogspot.com

At this site you will find hundreds of pictures of beautiful, unique, elegant, whimsical, avant-garde and unusual wedding cakes. Feel fee to take elements of two or more cakes to create your cake. There are no rules, if you want a unique flavor or bright color, go for it. They also have wonderful recipes you can use to make your own wedding cake.

Themed Weddings

If you and or your spouse are in law enforcement or the military you can have your cake made to reflect that. Do you share a hobby or activity? Design your cake to reflect that interest. Cake toppers can be a problem if they are tacky, cheap or just plain awful. However they can be elegant and unique, to reflect ethnic roots, religion, and hobbies.

You can separate the tiers of you wedding cake with items that can also reflect your interest.

Wedding cake pictures are very important to the couple, they will cherish them and remember all the delight for years to come. These pictures tell a story, they tell us something about the couple and their interests and about the baker designer.

One look, lasting a matter of seconds, and you will know if this is a cake design you can work with. This is a lot faster than reading cake descriptions and gives you more information.

One tip, when you see a cake that interests you, make a note of where you saw the picture and what attracts you. That way if you decide to take another look you won’t go nuts trying to locate it. Remember choosing a cake from looking at a wedding cake pictures should be fun, so relax and enjoy it.

Even if you’re new to cake decorating or an engaged couple on a budget, all you need are some basic cake decorating skills or a little time to shop online. You’ll soon have a cake that has everyone wanting to take a picture!

The quickest way to gather ideas for creating a cake topper or to find the perfect one to purchase is to window shop the Internet. Search with phrases such as “funny wedding cake topper,” “wedding anniversary cake topper,” etc. If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few examples:

· Hand-blown and spun glass cake toppers. Gold highlighted and sparkly or smooth and sleek, many of these are incredibly beautiful. A cake topper depicting a bride and groom ice-skating on top of a snowflake wedding cake is one of our favorites!

· Silver, gold or Swarovski crystal monograms (and numbers for birthdays and anniversaries)

· Sporty cake toppers can depict a bride and groom aboard a sailboat, riding horseback, roaring away in his and her race cars, and… well you get the picture.

· Humorous cake toppers include figures made in cartoonish likenesses of the betrothed and the popular resin figurines with bride and groom in formal wear acting out titles such as “The Tiff” and “Now I Have You.”

· Vintage cake toppers can be quite lovely – and interesting! Check out the reviews of Penny Henderson’s book, “Vintage Cake Toppers” at Amazon.com to get an idea of the possibilities.

· Character cake toppers are big hits with young children and brides and grooms. Mickey and Minnie at the altar, Winnie the Pooh and Friends on a child’s honey pot, sculpted birthday cake are a couple of examples.

· Fresh fruit (grapes, kumquats, etc.) or sugar-crystallized fruit arranged in an extravagant display can make a pretty picture! (Use whole fruit so there’s no danger of juice running into your icing).

· Castles – the sky’s the limit here! Your castle cake topper can be the top of a sculpted castle cake or a glass, fairy castle. Castle cake toppers are often requested for wedding and birthday cakes, as well as special theme cakes such as renaissance.

· Here’s a real attention grabber – a topsy-turvy cake with a cake topper that teeters over the edge. For example, a teapot with dormouse on a Mad Hatter cake or two figurines depicting mountain climbing bride and groom.

· Miniature toys. Here’s another simple way to make an amazing cake topper. One idea is to place a rotating doll stand on top of a tiered or stacked birthday cake. Then add a cute toy train, such as Thomas, or a carousel with pretty white horses in pink halters, and your cake will be a big hit

· Polymer clay cake toppers can add a great deal of meaning, fun or both to a cake. You can find companies online that create them in realistic likenesses of the bride and groom sharing an activity (ballroom dancing, golfing, you name it!) You can also find generic but adorable ones, such as the hula bride and groom at in Rebecca Russell’s “Round Head” collection at

http://www.rebeccarusselltoppers.com/brides_and_groom.htm

· Flowers – place a bouquet of white lilies, beautifully molded with gum paste or a bouquet of real orchids on top of the cake and then add a few around the cake (using flower spikes), some pretty borders, and you’ll have an amazingly beautiful cake.

Here’s a tip for using flowers as a cake topper. Take into consideration the size of the cake. Tiny flowers can be used on a large cake, but if used on their own, they’ll be lost. Conversely, large flowers like bird-of-paradise will dwarf a smaller cake. Also, as with any cake topper, consider the style and formality of the event. Daisies are more casual than roses, while stephanotis can swing either way.

Here are a few ideas for flower cake toppers:

· With a bouquet of flowers on top of the cake, arrange a few clusters of flowers here and there on the lower tiers as if a few blossoms have gracefully fallen from the bouquet.

· A gum paste plumeria or orchid lei encircling bride and groom figurines.

· Adorn your cake only with edible (non-poisonous) flowers, being sure that the flowers are also pesticide-free.

Many of these cake topper tips come from “Cake Decorating Made Easy!” Here’s what one reader said about our Video Books:

“I highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys baking, decorating and the feeling of accomplishment when everyone crowds around your cakes for a closer look.”

Joanne Robitaille, Windsor, Ontario, Canad

If you’ve enjoyed learning about the visual and symbolic effects of cake toppers, check out our article on Decorated Cakes!

And here’s one more cake topper tip: Be sure that your cake topper is positioned well on the cake. Use an ornament base or a plate underneath a cake topper so it won’t sink into the cake. Attach small decorations to the cake or plate with royal icing and/or flower spikes.

Are you tired of seeing the traditional three tier wedding cake with simple white frosting and the little bride and groom wedding cake topper. We all know the iconic wedding cake look and feel. If you are after a very formal or classic wedding then this is the exact cake you want. However, today many couples are opting for alternative wedding themes and a more relaxed feeling overall. With popular wedding themes like fairy tales, Dragonflies and other fun and light or even whimsical themes a traditional wedding cake no longer fits correctly in its place. It is nor time to take that old wedding cake out of the closet it and give it a whole new look. America seems to be in love with the idea of a makeover from the hit TV shows like Extreme Body Makeover, Extreme Home Makeover and the ever popular Pimp My Ride America seems to be in a love with makeovers. Well, wedding cakes are no different and today’s couples are going for more unusual, light and fun ideas for wedding cakes. So why not try some of these custom wedding cake ideas.

Creative and Custom Wedding Cake Toppers

There are a ton of different wedding cake toppers on the market today and you are no longer stuck with what your local bakery has. You can now easily shop online and find retailers selling a wide variety of wedding cake toppers. You can have anything from the traditional bride and groom to the whacky and wild. If you are willing to pay a little extra you can get a custom wedding cake topper sculpted out of special non toxic clay like material and created in the likeness of you and your husband. If you are really into a sport or want to show something unique about the two of you as a couple then a custom wedding cake topper is the way to go. The artists can easily make a couple doing just about anything. So if you are avid rock climbers then you can have a bride and groom fashioned in your likeness that are on the top of Yosemite Half Dome, or whatever sport or activity you like.

If you don’t want to be that adventurous then you might want to go for a custom initials wedding cake topper. These are beautiful wedding cake toppers created from your initials and then decorated with small crystals. Whatever you choose there is a wedding cake topper either already made or that can be custom made to fit your wedding theme.

Themed Wedding Cakes

If you just go to your local bakery or even a small wedding cake shop you are likely to just find the standard wedding cake offerings or the traditional cake. However, if you really want to do a wedding cake makeover ask if they can do themed wedding cakes. There are a wide variety of options for a custom wedding cake and some of the ways that you can customize are listed below.

Decorations

If you are not sure about all of this and want to stick somewhat to tradtion then why not go for the traditional cake but add some flare to it through the decorations and frosting. Most wedding cake bakers can add a wide variety of different ornaments and decorations to the wedding cake to really make it stand out. Sure you can go with the traditional shaped cakes like the three tiered circle or even a tiered square cake but that does not mean you can’t go a little crazy and get some interesting decorations put on it with unique frosting ideas. Try to pick up on the theme of the wedding as much as possible.

Sculpted Cakes

Now this is where a custom wedding cake baker really can show off their talents and the types of projects they often love to do. A baker who can do a sculpted cake might take a little work to find however once you find one you are only limited by your ideas. Do you want a big castle wedding cake? They can easily do this to make a fairy tale wedding cake. If you want a beach themed wedding cake why not get a picnic basket or a beautiful sand castle wedding cake. If you are contemplating getting a sculpted cake you can really have any three dimensional design that you can think of. Why not try a hamburger and fries for a fun and light hearted beach wedding cake. The sky is the limited once you get a sculpted cake.

Mini Cakes and Cup Cakes

Again if you don’t quite feel ready to make the commitment to such a grand cake like above and want to keep a little bit on the traditional side yet with a flair of fun why not try a mini wedding cake or even cupcakes. These are fun because they are small individual serving sized cakes that your guests will love. If you are planning on having a small wedding it can be a lot of fun to create personalized mini wedding cakes for the guests.

Whatever you choose always keep in mind that there are options out there to customize, tweak, alter and change just about every factor of your wedding cake. Let you mind wander and have fun a bit and go for something a little different. Always make sure to plan ahead and leave enough time for the baker to do the extra job well. Otherwise you are all set to go with a fun and unique wedding cake that is a definite extreme makeover from the traditional three or five tiered wedding cake.

Your wedding cake design should demonstrate your personal taste and style and of course fit the décor of your reception.

Follow me and I will help you with every step in choosing the right cake. You will develop a feeling of joy and relief, as you should, while preparing for your wedding. I promise you that.

Choose your wedding cake only after you have decided on your gown, the bridesmaid dresses, the reception site, the theme, colors and anything else that could have an effect on which cake you choose.

You could select a photo of a cake you love first and then try to match everything else to that. However, that approach will likely be much harder. After all once you cut and serve the cake everything else you have chosen to match it will still be there but the cake is just a memory.

Couples only fool themselves if they think guests only care about the cake’s taste and the decorating and design of a wedding cake. Other than the bride’s beautiful dress and glowing face nothing says wedding like a wonderfully decorated and designed wedding cake.

Unique wedding cake inspiration may come from looking at pictures of wedding cake designs. You may find a photo that will help you design the wedding cake of your dreams to enhance your reception.

There are several approaches one can take in choosing wedding cake designs, from traditional cream or white icing in classical designs to totally modern artistic colorful masterpieces. Nowadays anything goes.

The wedding cakes we see today are very different than in the past. Designs have evolved to suit the taste of today’s couples. More and more couples are choosing cupcake towers for the wedding. This is one of the newest and original wedding cake ideas ever.

Another wedding cake style that is gaining in popularity is the miniature cake. Traditional round wedding cakes may soon fade out since all sorts of other shapes are becoming very popular. Square, oval, heart, octagon and other shapes are gaining in popularity. However some couples still prefer traditional round cakes and flavors like cheesecake for the wedding cakes.

Whatever shape or flavor you choose, your wedding cake, to your friends and family will always symbolize love, the sweetness of life, prosperity and fertility.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when deciding your wedding cake design. How much can you spend on the cake? Will the cake be the only dessert? How big of a cake will you need? Not every guest will want cake if you offer other desserts or a meal.

Will a particular cake fit your reception decorating scheme and menu? Today’s cake designers offer an almost endless variety of cake styles, decorating, choice of construction, flavors, icing and decorations.

How many tiers do you want, in what colors? Do you want a custom made, one of a kind cake topper? Do you as a couple have a shared passion, job or hobby? Make your cake topper reflect that interest. You can get anything from animal to motorcycle cake toppers.

Or do you just want a porcelain or crystal bride and groom cake topper?

There are very nice online stores that sell a wide variety of elegant and whimsical wedding cake toppers.

Are you planning to serve the cake as dessert or do you want to put slices in little boxes for the guests to take home?

Try to make preliminary decisions on these and other issues before you consider visiting any bakery or cake designer. However stay open to suggestions from these experts. You can get your wedding cake from your caterer, reception site or bakery. Try to order your cake from someone who specializes in wedding cakes or who does one or more weddings a week.

Ask for references and check them out. Ask past clients if they were satisfied with the cake and if they have any hints for dealing with this particular baker or bakery.

Some newlyweds want to save the top layer of their wedding cake for their first anniversary or the birth of their first child. Check with your baker to see if he can freeze and store the top layer of your wedding cake for a year.

When you want to knock their socks off; when you want them to stand up and cheer; when nothing but the best will do because it is your wedding day; that is when you serve a spectacular wedding cake.

Do not let the vision of confetti, the crash of cymbals, or the fanfare of trumpets deter you from attempting to come up with such remarkable wedding cakes.

Generally, wedding cakes are is the conventional cake being dished up to the guests at the breakfast after the wedding. It is characterized as a huge cake, different from the usual cakes we have on ordinary occasions. In most cases, wedding cakes are layered or multi-layered and are heftily decorated with icing, beads, and other embellishments that would reflect the grandiose of the event. On the top is a small image of a bride and groom.

Wedding cakes can go from the simplest to the most complex decorations; each has its own artistic distinctions depending on the creative juices of the baker. They should conform to the main purpose of the cake, that whatever embellishments it possess, it can still be edible and can be eaten.

Because the wedding cake is such an important part in the wedding celebration, here are some tips you need to know in case you will be buying a wedding cake in the future.

1. Check on the length of time required for you in ordering your wedding cake.

Time is such an important factor when making wedding plans. Of course, you would not want your wedding be hurriedly done or rushed. Because the wedding cake is a part of the wedding plan, it is important to devote an appropriate time in ordering wedding cakes.

It is best to ask your favorite bakeshop on the time frame that they usually give with regards to wedding cake so that you can make early orders if it will take such a long time to create your wedding cake. In this way, you will not be in a hurry coming up with a wedding cake to be served on your wedding day.

2. Verify the details of the cake and its cost.

A lot of couples are so fascinated with the luscious treats that go with their wedding cake. What they do not know is that each embellishment and every twists and turns embedded in the cake has a price.

Therefore, it would be better to clear it out with your baker how much will be the cost of every decoration are added features you wish to add on your wedding cake.

3. Tell your baker about the details of your wedding.

In today’s modern world, weddings are not just done in the church. A lot of ideas had come up in terms of wedding venues. Therefore, if ever you have any plans of having your wedding by the beach or anywhere else where it is open, it would be better to inform your baker about this.

In most cases, icings are vulnerable to environmental hazards. So, if the baker knows that your wedding will be a garden wedding or a wedding by the beach, he could make such arrangements with your cake in order to endure the environmental conditions where it will be placed.

4. In a budget? Why not decorate your own wedding cake.

It is not so uncommon nowadays to find somebody decorating his or her own wedding cake. In fact, it is a feasible idea especially to those who have a very tight budget.

All you have to do is to order a plain wedding cake and buy the decorations from the retail stores.

5. Choose the right bakeshop

If you have an idea on where the best bakery is in your city, then head to that place immediately. You can ask suggestions from your friends or family members also. Get a reservation at once. Do not procrastinate. The availability of cake decorators might be restricted. Be sure to drop by the bakeshop to talk about the designs, flavors and other things you wanted to add to your cake. Be sure to give a detailed description of exactly what you want your cake to be. Give the vendor ample time to prepare, approximately six months ahead of your big day would do. You may need to pay a deposit fee for reservation.

6. The right taste

Aside from the look of the cake, keep in mind that cakes are made primarily for eating. They should taste good as well as they look good. The texture and flavor of the cake itself is important. When scouting for a bakeshop, don’t hesitate to ask for cake samples of the flavors you want. If they do not allow this, jump to the next store.

7. Check on your budget

Wedding cakes ranges from $300 to $1000 or so. Cost primarily depends on the cake design you want. You have to pay for the cake decorator’s fee on top of the cost of the cake itself. Know what your budget is ahead of time. Some shops may give you free delivery too. Most bakeshop has a standard number of servings for each cake type. Know how many guests would attend your wedding so you would know more or less how much money you would allocate for the cake.

8. Flowers as decorations

Flowers have been a traditional thing on weddings. You can well put them in cakes too. You can either choose from fresh flowers or artificial ones. Fresh flowers are beautiful addition to your cakes. But it is very important that you choose fresh flowers wisely. Be sure that they are free from chemicals. Just to be on the safe side, sugar flowers are safer. These are edible gum paste decorations that have wire or toothpicks on them.

9. Where to place the cake

Most cakes, especially on summer, might end up melted under the heat of the sun. They can also cause flowers and flavored curls to dry up. Not to mention the possibility of flies gathering on your priced cake. Just be sure, always have a back up site where you can store your cakes to preserve its look and taste. Never place your wedding cake near the dance floor or where there is a heavy flow of traffic. You might just see your cake fall down. That’s not a good sight at all! Be sure to check the sturdiness of the table you would place your cake.

Buying wedding cakes can be fun and hassle-free. Remember that your wedding cakes needs to be presentable, most of the photo opts are done beside the cake. It’s always nice to give out that bright smile beside you’re well decorated cake that brings out your personal statement.

So, set aside some special decisive moment when it comes to your wedding cake because there would be no better way to glamorize your wedding than to have a perfectly made wedding cake.

Wedding cake bakeries will have a cake portfolio to look at and that will help you decide if they are able to make the cake you want.

Have an idea of how many guests you will have at your reception, this will help determine the amount of wedding cake you will need or number of cupcake wedding cakes. The pastry chef/cake decorator may ask how many invitations are being sent to how many people and how many are from out of town or from more than a certain number of miles away.

The pastry chef/cake decorator will use this information to calculate how many people will actually show up at the reception and how many of those will actually eat a piece or more of cake.

By this time several people, such as the minister and caterer, will have asked for this information. They will have calculated and told you how many people they think will actually attend your wedding and reception.

You will have been appalled at the low number they came up with. You know that everyone you invite is waiting breathlessly to attend your wedding and that only those who are ill or incapacitated or on Moon will pass up the chance to wish you well in person on your big day. When the baker comes up with a similar number, believe him because it’s true.

Many people will simply forget and others can think of no way worse to spend a summer Saturday than at another wedding. That’s just the way it is. And you can believe it and save some money, or you can believe that everyone will come and then have to decide what to do with the leftover cake.

Do whatever will do the most to put your mind at ease for the next six to eight months. Saving money by ordering only a sufficient amount of cake based on the years of experience of your baker is no good if you are going to fret over it and be nervous about it for more than half a year.

Sleeping well, feeling good and setting your mind at ease before your big day is a lot more important than saving money and having no leftovers. You will have enough to go crazy with as your wedding approaches.

When in wedding cake bakery, be clear about the date, time, and location of the wedding and receptions; set deadlines for changes to the cake design and size and for delivery; provide the address of and a map to the reception.

Make sure that the cake can be delivered at a time convenient to you or whomever you will have to receive and inspect the cake.

There should be a written contract with the wedding cake bakery to specify the size, shape, flavor, color, decorations, delivery day, delivery time, delivery place, and price of wedding cake.

Such a contract, of course, does not need a special form or a lawyer to draw it up. It can be a simple list with this information. The list should be dated and signed by both the baker and you, and you should each have a copy.

Many wedding cake bakeries have their own form for such orders because it is as important to them that you remember exactly what you asked for and don’t remember asking for something that you never mentioned as it is to you that they deliver what you did ask for.

If they have their form, use it and add any items or information that you need to. Make sure you take a copy of their form.

Bring swatches of material to match the cake to your wedding colors because colors in pictures are often slightly off and a picture’s colors can fade with time. (But again, don’t forget the picture of the wedding cake.)

Below you will find list of questions you should ask the pastry chef, baker, or cake decorator at the wedding cake bakery. It is your special day you have every right to ask questions!

Questions to ask at the bakery:

(Suggestion: print these questions, you will certainly need them)!

1. Can pastry chef/cake decorator create custom cake from your instructions and to look like your wedding-cake picture.

2. What flavors of wedding cake and icing are available? Or if you already have an idea what you want, ask “Can you make a (type of cake) with (flavor of icing)?”

3. Ask to sample some of the bakery’s cakes. If you don’t care for any of the cake samples offered by the bakery, ask for additional samples or as what other choices are available.

Even if you have to order a small cake to try the baker’s version of what you want, it is a small price to pay for satisfaction.

4. In case you want to use fresh flowers to decorate the wedding cake, ask if the bakery can provide them or if you or a florist must deliver them.

5.Request to see pictures of wedding cakes from their photo gallery. Take a look at their album and see if you like the looks of the cakes. Ask how old the pictures are and if the person who baked and decorated these cakes is the same person who will create yours.

6. Does the bakery, baker, pastry chef, or cake decorator has the required licenses and has passed health inspections. Licensing varies from state to state, but a bakery is probably required to be licensed as a retail food establishment or as a food preparer.

The health department of the city, county, or state probably issues licenses. The baker, pastry chef, and decorator may also be required to be licensed or qualified as a food handler.

You can go to most states’ web sites and find out just what licensing is required so that you know what to ask for.

Most bakeries will gladly let you look at the kitchen to see where the cake will be mixed, baked, decorated, and stored; this is probably as satisfying as seeing the licenses.

You should probably ask to take a peek at the kitchen after asking about the licenses. You can also ask to see the results of the latest health inspection.

7. If you simply don’t like frozen food and don’t want it served at your wedding, ask if the wedding cake will be frozen. But understand that some people believe the taste of several cakes improves after freezing.

8. Ask how long before the wedding date the cakes will be prepared and how they will be kept until time for delivery. If you think the time or the method of storage will result in the bridal cake not being as fresh as you want, express your feeling to the person you are talking with.

He or she either will explain or demonstrate that this will not be a problem or will negotiate a shorter length of storage. She may let you sample some cake kept for that length of time. Some cakes keep well when frozen, and others do not.

Pound cakes and some carrot cakes seem to improve with freezing. If you are not satisfied and cannot reach some agreement, you must use another bakery.

9. To find how much time and attention will be spent on your cake, ask how many orders the bakery typically has for the weekend of your order and how many of those your pastry chef might be producing.

A large volume can be an indication that not a lot of time and attention can be devoted to your cake. But a very busy bakery also indicates that many people like its products and trusts its work. Wedding cake bakery that no one likes will have plenty of time to dedicate to your cake, but that alone will not guarantee good results.

Neither will a very busy bakery guarantee good results all the time. For one, you may need to check with them during the week of production to make sure that things are going well.

For the other, you may want to check to make sure that your order has not somehow been overlooked among so many orders. In either case verify that your cake is in the process of being prepared.

10. Ask if the decorator is experienced and good and if he or she decorated the cakes pictured in the bakery’s gallery.

The point of such a question is to find out whether you will be getting the best the bakery has to offer and whether you will be served by the same personnel that did the work seen in the bakery’s photo album and for the references you will contact.

You may be satisfied that all decoration is supervised by a master decorator with long experience and excellent references, even though the actual work may be done by one of several less experienced decorators.

11. Ask to be introduced to each of the people who will bake, decorate, and deliver the cake. You may have questions you want to ask. If you do, ask them.

For example, you might be concerned with the experience each one has. If so, you might ask how many cakes they have baked or decorated. I might be more concerned to simply ask whether they did the cakes in the bakery’s album of cakes.

If you have no questions, ask to meet them anyway. Introduce yourself and try to make it easy for them to remember your name and your face. Show a great pleasure at meeting the people who have created the wonderful masterpieces that have come from this bakery and tell them that you look forward to having them create your wedding cake.

What you are creating is a personal relationship with these artists at the wedding cake bakery. Like all workers and artists, these people like being appreciated and will do their best work for someone who has praised them and treats them as a master of their craft.

This goes as well for the person taking your order, whether it is the owner, manager, or just the order taker. I suggest that you work to make as good an impression on them as you expect them to try to make on you. Dress well when you are shopping for a bakery.

You don’t have to dress like you’re meeting the Queen or the First Lady, but don’t be dressing like you’re about to be hitting the bars with your friends on your bachelorette party–not unless you dress a lot better for that than most of the young women in my neighborhood.

Please try to time your visits so that the bakery is not crowded with customers. This is particularly important in smaller bakeries.

12.If you are concerned, ask whether the cake be made from scratch or from packaged mixes. Packaged mixes are so much more expensive that few busy bakeries would use them. And if they produce the wedding cake you want and it tastes good, do you care whether it’s from a mix or from scratch?

13. Ask what the price will be. If the baker can give you an estimate but not the final cost, ask how much the final cost might vary from the estimate.

If the baker says that they will charge by how long it takes because they charge by the hour, ask how many hours it will take and do the calculation yourself.

Again, if it’s an estimate of hours, ask how far the hours might vary from that estimate. If you feel uncomfortable with the bakery’s commitment to giving you a number, maybe you should find another bakery.

14. Ask for customer references so that you can talk to with them. Then actually contact them and ask about their experience with the bakery.

While they were probably very pleased with the bakery (otherwise you’d think the bakery would not be giving them as a reference), they may give you some pointers about how best to deal with the bakery.

15. Request a written proposal that includes the size of the cake, the flavor, the icing type and flavor, the description of the cake: Number of tiers or number of cupcakes or miniature cakes, decorations, the date and time the cake would be ready, whether it would be delivered and where and when, and the price.

Some bakeries will put all of this in a proposal and some will commit to just the basic items. Press for commitment to everything that is important to you.

When I was 12 or 13, I remember being the hostess at my cousin’s wedding. One of the first things that I saw when I walked into the reception hall was this beautiful wedding cake. For years, I dreamed of a fairytale wedding cake just like hers. The cake was tall, separated by columns with a few tiers, although I can’t remember exactly how many there were. At the top of the wedding cake were the bride and groom, and on the side were the bridesmaids and groomsmen standing on staircases that led to the top. The staircases were also connected to smaller cakes that adorned the side and underneath the cake was a fountain. I think many brides remember the era of the big cakes with all kinds of special decorations on them. I just stood there amazed and looked at her beautiful wedding cake decked out in the colors of the wedding and dreamed of the day that I would cut into my own wedding cake that looked just like that. That cake was probably the second most admired part of that wedding.

As brides, we want that reaction to our wedding cakes as well. We want people to mill around it and admire the creation that is a symbolic of a couples new union. We have dreams of hearing those “ooh’s” and “ah’s” and the conversations about the décor, the colors, and the height of the cake. The right wedding cake should take the breath away of all your guests, and make them anxious to take a bite.

The wedding cake is one of the major elements of the wedding day. Because it is such a big purchase, much time and purpose needs to be dedicated into making the perfect cake. If you have never planned a wedding before, you may have a hard time figuring out where to start. Well, by the end of this article, I hope that you will have a clearer understanding about what you need to create that wedding cake of your dreams.

The Shape Basics

First, let’s focus on the different shapes of most cakes. The shape of your cake is very important because it can affect the number of people that can be served and the price as well.

Round: This is the traditional shape of most wedding cakes and is still widely used by most brides. Because the shape of the round cake is the most simplistic, it is usually the least expensive; plus it’s usually easier to decorate.

Square: The square wedding cake is, usually, used by brides that want to break away from the traditional round cakes; but at the same time, they still have the look of a basic wedding cake. The square cake can be more expensive because it may require more labor. Oftentimes, the baker has to cut the sides of the cake to make them look sharper and neater.

Heart: For those eternal romantics, this is the cake shape for you. Again it may be a bit more labor intensive depending on how it is to be frosted and decorated. It’s also important to keep in mind that the amount served from this shape may differ from that of other shapes.

Mad Hatter: This is for the couples that really want to have a more whimsical & fun feel to their wedding cakes. These cakes are usually uneven & slanted shaped. This is for the bold couples that are not afraid to be different. Instead of the traditional wedding décor, these cakes are usually decorated in bold colors and patterns.

Hexagon: This is a cake with six sides. This is another shape that is growing in popularity because it is a deviation from the traditional round wedding cake. Again, the price of this cake is more expensive than that of a round cake because of the time it will take the baker to cut and frost these cakes, but the finished product can be absolutely breathtaking.

The Icing

You basically have two different types of icing – butter cream and fondant.

Although there are a variety of recipes for making butter cream icing, it is usually made with butter, sugar, milk, and vanilla. It has a thick but creamy texture that is easy to cut through. For a bride on a budget, butter cream icing is a great way to go because it is usually cheaper than fondant. It can also be used as a filling for your cake as well. A downside to butter cream is that it can melt in hot settings, so if you are having an outdoor soiree, butter cream icing may not be your best option.

Fondant is made from sugar, corn syrup, and gelatin. It is very elastic in texture. With fondant, you can literally roll it out with a rolling pin. Because of its strength and elasticity, many bakers use it for unique architectural designs. It can be shaped and molded into many different designs. Fondant is usually more expensive because it is more labor intensive.

Your Dream Wedding Cake

One of the things that you may have been thinking about since you got that rock on your finger is what your wedding cake will look like. If you are anything like me, you have already flipped through the wedding and bridal magazines and even looked at the pictures on the wedding websites in order to get an idea of what you want.

I think a great way to figure out what you want in your cake is to think about your personality and what you like. Do you like for things to be grand and theatrical? If so, you may want a tall cake with lots of decoration. Are you planning a small wedding reception with a few friends and family and think that a huge cake for 200 is ridiculous? Maybe you want something simple in stature and design. Your personality should be key in deciding what you want. When thinking about my wedding cake, I just thought about my style when it came to decorating and how I dress. I don’t like for my house to look cluttered. I want everything neat and in its place. When choosing clothes, I tend to stay away from crazy patterns; I like a well-put-together classic, yet modern look. So knowing that I liked things to look sleek sophisticated, and clean, an intricate design for my wedding cake isn’t something that I am interested in. I decided that my dream cake would have three tiers with white frosting and the cake decoration will follow suit.

Another good way to figure out what kind of cake you want is to think about the theme of your wedding. Think about whatever motifs you will sprinkle throughout the wedding, the cake should reflect this as well because it will be a focal point in the reception. If you are having an urban sophistication theme, should you really get the grand cake with the tons of flowers flowing from it? Maybe not, however, a cake of this magnitude may be great for a garden theme. So once you pick your wedding theme, your cake will take its shape (no pun intended).

Money Saving Tips

As you may have noticed, certain small details can really raise the price of your wedding cake. One of the most important things to keep in mind, when choosing a cake, is the amount of people that you plan to serve. Part of your price depends on the number of guests that you will have. This is one reason why cutting the guest list can always bring down budget costs. This is especially true if you are paying for a cake that has pricing that is based on the slice. For instance, if you have a cake that is $1.50 per slice and you are inviting 300 people, your cake without any décor will be $450. So one way to keep costs down is to keep the guest list as small as possible.

Another way to keep costs down when it comes to your dream cake is labor. The more intricate your cake decoration details are the more your costs will increase. If you want a 4-tiered cake with a lace-like pattern, understand that someone must do that pattern which can take hours to recreate. Certain patterns, piping, or detailed frosting designs can take a lot of time and work. Remember, this labor increases your price. So, if you want to keep cost down, make the decorations simple.

Fresh flowers on the cake always bring cost downs. As brides, we are completely intrigued by the gum paste flowers that are edible and beautiful. I mean, they look like the real thing and they mimic every detail of the real flowers. Because they do, these beautiful details cost. If you decide to decorate using fresh flowers instead, your décor can still be as breathtaking without the exorbitant prices.

Ribbons are a simple way to bring your wedding colors into your wedding cake design. This way you can decorate your cake without raising the price. Because my tastes are quite simple, I love the idea of putting a thick beautiful ribbon around the cake and pinning it with pearl pins. This is a very simple way to decorate and the pearl gives a look of sophistication to the cake as well. Again, using ribbons instead of icing as a decoration choice can make for a beautiful wedding cake without the large price.

Go to the grocery store. Every visit to the grocery store is like a visit to your cake baker. As I begin shopping at my local grocer, I always see beautiful wedding cakes staring at me. These are cakes that are designed by the grocery stores in-house staff. The quality of the cakes on display is a true testament of the level of talent these bakers have. Who at your wedding will actually say, “This is a terrible cake because it came from the grocery store”? People in the wedding industry, along with many other socialites, will make you feel that a grocery store wedding cake is a cheap cake that will taste bad and is bad for your guests. Don’t listen to them. Every cake that I have had from a grocery store has been delicious, and many of the guests, at weddings that I have planned, have said that the cakes were delicious (and they had no ideas that it came from their local grocery store). Many grocery stores will work to match your colors as well as your decoration needs. They are even willing to set up cake tastings with you, and some even have faux layers to offer!

Have a fake cake. Many brides are doing it to get the drama of a beautiful wedding cake without the price. They will have a faux cake, and in the back is a sheet cake cut up for the guests. This is a brilliant idea for brides on a budget. Bakers can do faux cakes because many of their store displays are fake cakes. This is not something that a baker may offer, but you can always ask. If you want, you can have it where only part of the cake can be fake. This way you can still have the cake cutting experience.

Stay simple with flavors. My mom wants chocolate. I love carrot. He likes red velvet. His mom has to have almond. Getting a cake with a variety of flavors sounds grand, but more than one flavor can make the cost rise. The most inexpensive flavor is probably, the simple white or yellow cake. Some bakers will increase the price depending on what flavor you choose or if you choose more than one flavor, so this is a good thing to keep in mind. Again, you must ask yourself, will your guest really have a bad night because the cake was simply yellow? I have never been to a wedding where I was just sorely disappointed because of the flavor of the cake. I am usually taken by the wedding cake’s appearance anyway.

It’s very important to keep in mind that, simple shapes equal less money. Wedding cakes are works of art, and more and more bakers see themselves as artists pushing the limits and making wonderful edible masterpieces. So, if you want a cake shape that is hard to ice or decorate, you will have to come out of pocket to pay for it. Round cakes are the cheapest and the easiest to decorate. Whereas, frosting a heart shape cake may take more time and care, and most importantly money!

Time To Meet Your Baker

Before you meet with the baker, you need to have a sure idea of what you want in a wedding cake. If you don’t, going to the baker or any other wedding vendor, for that matter, can make your budget grow in a matter of minutes. As an example, think about buying a house. You don’t usually go house hunting unless you have a good idea of what your buying budget is. You have to know “how much house you can afford”. The same thing applies to planning your wedding and meeting with your baker. Make sure you have a firm idea of what your budget is and what it can get you before making any visits, because the first thing you will see before you even meet the baker are the beautiful wedding cake displays, which can carry you into another world.

Make sure to shop around. I do think it is appropriate to visit with at least 3 bakers. You want to be able to shop around for the best deals that you can find. So, don’t be so eager to book the first person that you talk to. Meet with them. Check out their websites. Do some research. Ask for references. I was planning on meeting and booking with one particular wedding baker because their prices were perfect. When conducting research for my clients I always check with the Better Business Bureau. And in this case I found out there were 2 negative complaints related to this vendor concerning their product and delivery. Research – Research – Research!

Make it clear with the baker what your budget is upfront. That way you all know what you are working with. You can sit and taste all the cakes that you want only to find out that they are way above your price. Knowing what the budget is up front helps you and the baker to find something within your price range and it saves everybody time.

Ask questions. Don’t be quiet while the baker makes arrangements for you. Make sure all that you want can be accommodated. That is the only way you will get what you want. Here are some questions you can ask the baker.

o How are your wedding cakes priced?

o Can you customize a wedding cake or do you just work with certain styles?

o What are your different cake flavors and fillings?

o What type of icing do you use? Fondant? Butter cream?

o Are there any extra fees that are not included with the base price?

o Does the price listed include the top tier?

o How far in advanced will my cake be made?

o Who will be the actual one baking my cake?

o Do you have a cake-cutting fee?

o How do you deliver the cake?

Get everything in writing. When talking to the baker, make sure that everything is in the contract. If you want the delivery to be at a certain time and the baker agrees, make sure it is in the contract. This can also include who is actually baking and decorating your wedding cake. Make sure it includes all pricing and what should happen if you cancel. All details should be in the contract. This way there will be no confusion about anything on your big day, which helps cut out unnecessary stress. It also helps to go over the contract a few days to a week before the wedding with the baker to make sure that everything you want will be handled. Happy Cake Hunting!

Everything evolves and just like wedding themselves, wedding cake of the 21st century represent some new and fresh ideas.

Personalization – a definite trend in wedding cakes

21st Century brides and grooms want the wedding cake to be as individual as they are.

There used to be a time when brides chose a cake from the catalog the baker gave them, or brought a picture from a magazine. Today brides as well as grooms, realize how special they are and do not want a replica of a pictured cake. Aware that the wedding cake is the centerpiece of their reception, they want to have their cake individually designed to their own personal style and taste, both taste in design and taste in flavor. So they put on their thinking caps and are coming in with their own ideas, usually coordinating their cake design, the frosting design, the decorations and the cake topper, with the wedding color scheme, wedding theme, bridal attire, flowers, wedding accessories, reception hall decor, and if they have children, the family.
Having provide the bakers with details to adhere to, they expect the result to be a totally unique and PERSONALIZED cake.

The Shape

Gone are the over-embellished cakes. Today brides and grooms want to express themselves with wedding cakes to look luxurious, classy and elegant, coordinate well with the wedding motifs and taste scrumptiously good.

Though round tiers are still the favorite, tiers shaped as square, octagon, and hexagon are gaining popularity, as do tiers of different shapes stacked together. For example, round tiers on square or hexagon tiers. Once assemble the shape(s) and color(s) chosen should produce a simple yet luxurious, classy and elegant look.

The Structure

The trend in cake structure offer a few choices all leave plenty of room for personalization and creativity.

A 21st Century traditional wedding cake is usually assembled of 3 to 5 tiers stacked upon each other without a separation such as the once popular Greek columns. A variation is a wedding cake ensemble that displays each layer individually rather than stacked. connected by a motif.

A relatively new comer is the drum. This is a popular technique that brides and groom appreciate. Basically, bakers add a layer looking Styrofoam insert that adds height and volume to the cake without the expense of a cake layer. The inserts provide a perfect place to tuck in charms for the charm pull, flowers or cake jewelry should the couple want to utilize it in this manner.

An ever-growing number of marrying couples are choosing alternatives to the traditional wedding cake save one tier for the bride and groom to slice and feed each other and for wedding photos.

With the costs of weddings in general and the rise in wedding cakes relating fees, a few new trends have become quite popular. Brides and grooms, especially if they have to stay within a specified budget are looking for ways to save money.
So, what used to be a creative alternative by some became a trend.

The trend concentrates on options that eliminate the cutting and serving fees usually charged by caterers.

Other benefits that were realized, are that they can also shave off the centerpiece expense and serve as dessert.

Following are two options that are favored.
# An individual single layer wedding cake for each table to makes a spectacular and edible centerpiece. For additional fun, guests are invited to cut and serve the guests seated at their table.

# A cupcake wedding cake actually, cupcake tower as a wedding cake is a well-liked trend. Most couples top their cupcake tower with a cake tier for the bride and groom. Quite a few brides and grooms we interviewed, planned to place a mini cup cake tower on each table as a dessert and centerpiece in one.

# We even came across brides and grooms who chose Golden donuts because donuts look like wedding bands.
There are a few reasons the single layer centerpiece. the cupcake or mini-cupcakes and even the donuts wedding cakes to some extent, are becoming very popular.
# They are real money savers.
# They do not require special skills and can be home-baked way ahead of time and frozen.

# They can be lavishly decorated and makes a wonderful edible centerpiece to be enjoyed by all.

# They can have different flavors, various delicious fillings, different though coordinating colors and fancy decorations.

# Busy brides and grooms can order their cupcakes or single layer cakes in a supermarket bakery, or shopping clubs such as Costco and Sams Club where they are very reasonably priced.

# They eliminate all slicing and serving costs.

# They allow, actually invite creativity.

# A common denominator we encountered was couples who utilized different icing colors and – or themes for their centerpiece cakes to distinguish the different tables. matching the place settings and place cards.

Whether sophisticated, whimsical or anywhere in between, Cupcake and mini cake centerpieces are unique and gaining popularity fast.

The Icing on the Cake

Though butter cream, and cream cheese frostings are still in demand, the current trend in cake frosting is flavor and color enriched Rolled fondant or the less expensive faux-fondant with its smooth and elegant porcelain look that encourages creativity. Cake bakers can match wedding colors, motifs, duplicate intricate details and create silhouettes and scrollwork to complement wedding themes.

The Flavors

When I got married, the weding cake was either vanilla, chocolate or a marble of the two. Today there are tens of flavors for the bride and groom to choose from. Many tend to choose a different flavor for each tier, cake, or a certain number of cupcakes to represent their individual favorite cake flavors. Some add different filling for each cake flavor as well as frostings of different flavors.

The Decorations

Personalization is paramount. Brides and grooms use their freedom of expression throughout the wedding and the cake is no exception. The latest trend is to surround the center layer with a ribbon personalized with the bride and groom’s first names and wedding date. Though the cake is consumed, the ribbon becomes a wedding keepsake.

Wedding theme and seasons are dominant throughout the wedding and the cake as well.

Cutout silhouettes may accent the wedding theme upon the wedding cake. Flowers, marzipan fruit , candy pearls, curving scrollwork, and family initials are also very popular cake decorations and so is incorporating two or more shades of the same color within the frosting.
The Wedding Cake Companions – recent trend.

Two 21st trends one a historical custom renewed and the other brand new are the Grooms cake and the Children Family wedding cake.

The Groom Cake is a concept that was unfamiliar, when I got married 42 years ago but was familiar earlier in history. It has made a comeback and is occupying center stage. placed on the same table with the wedding cake is a single-layer rectangle Groom Cake. Many brides like to choose his favorite flavor and color and have the decorations represent his unique personality, hobbies and interests.

Another cake that has recently been added to the cake table is the Children Family wedding cake. This is a rather new concept that evolved quite recently, as more and more Blending Family Weddings that celebrating the kids, began to take place.

Celebrating their becoming a family, many couples use a Family Cake topper.

We have come across a few variations of the cake.

A Single-layer rectangle, Frosted and decorated with the kids various, hobbies and interests, topped with a Family Cake Topper currently available with a bride a groom and a boy, a bride a groom and a girl or a silhouette style a bride a groom and two children.

A cupcake tower is very popular with the kids too. Each layer of cupcakes can be devoted to a single child.

The Cake Tops

Wedding Cake Trends: Unique Cake Top

The cake tops is the crown of the wedding cake. It is a keepsake that should also make the wedding cake a conversation piece.

Personalization is the current trend. Cake toppers are often chosen because they either reflect the lifestyle or hobbies the bride and groom share together, coordinate with the wedding theme, emphasize the wedding flowers or display their initials.

One of the hottest cake top trends is individual initials or a monogram created with stunning Cake Jewelry, another is a couple resembling the bride and groom.

Flowers and ribbon cake tops have never died out and though they are not a trend, they are quite popular.

For family weddings, family cake tops that represent a bride, a groom and children are in very high demand.

TIP:

Set and adhere to your wedding cake budget.
# Visit with at least 3 wedding cake chefs, leaving room for negotiations.

# Check out their portfolios and taste samples of their cakes.

# Be sure to get everything in a written contract that does not leave room for price changes.

# Even if you are on a strict budget, your less inexpensive cake should taste just as good as an expensive one because it is not the taste but the size and decorations that are costly.

The cake is the one part of the wedding that should always be present. For some people, it is as important as the actual wedding ceremony. The bride and groom can be excused for forgetting the wedding favors or forgoing the wedding dance, but nobody in his or her right mind would forget the wedding cake. Unfortunately, wedding cakes are notoriously expensive. Like any other item that is preceded with the word “wedding”, the cake comes with a ridiculously high price. But it is still possible to find affordable wedding cakes and stay within the wedding’s budget. To find these sweet deals on cakes, the bride must think like a married woman already.

The secret to the costs of cake
Some cakes are terribly expensive even when they appear unattractive, while others have prices that are too good to be true. Do cheaper cakes use ingredients that are in season? What’s the real deal with cakes?

The truth is that the flavors of the cake have nothing to do with its price. The factors that determine the cake’s price are the materials, such as fondant icing, the labor and skills (and reputation) of the baker, and the time spent in making the cake. This is why a round cake that is plain and smooth is more expensive than a round cake with several decorations. A plain smooth cake needs to be baked perfectly. If the cake turns out to be slightly lopsided, the baker will need to bake another one. On the other hand, a cake with flower decorations and icing may have imperfections but these are hidden underneath those sugary treats. This goes without saying that cakes with commonly used materials are less expensive than special ones.

The feast to the eyes
Now that you know what makes cakes expensive, your next step is to avoid the special ones. A cake that is called a “wedding cake” is definitely special. Thus, what you will be looking for is any other cake. Simply put, you need an ordinary cake that will look like a wedding cake. Is there a fundamental difference between a custom made wedding cake and an ordinary cake that can pass as a wedding cake? The answer is no. A cake is a cake. The only thing that makes the wedding cake special is its visual appeal. Therefore, when looking for cakes, you must find something that will be a feast to the eyes. It can be square, triangular, heart-shaped, two-tier, or single tier. Then, carefully choose adornments to an ordinary cake, such as fruits, ribbons, flowers, and figurines. Finally, to make this cake doubly special, it should be made as the centerpiece of the wedding reception.

Practicality meets brilliance
The most envied trait of married women is that they are both brilliant and practical. Since youre getting married, you already have these traits. You only need to use them when choosing wedding cakes. Here are some suggestions of other women like you.

* Find a local baker. Local bakers are friendlier and more flexible. Some of them would not even charge for that extra little slice of cake that will be eaten during your first year anniversary.
* Take time in window-shopping. Visit as many bakeries as possible. Check out bridal magazines and other sources that will provide you with more information about wedding cakes.
* Consider buying a smaller cake and then complement this with cupcakes or sheet cakes. The cupcakes are less messy and more affordable. You can even make the cupcakes a day ahead of the wedding.
* If you must have a three-tiered cake but can afford only two, try a fake bottom tier and have the upper tiers made of real cake. It would be great on the photos and good for everyone’s health.
